Whuffo is long-standing skydiver slang for a non-skydiver. The word is a compression of the question every jumper has been asked: 'whuffo you jump outta them airplanes?'
Mostly affectionate
The term is generally used lightly rather than dismissively — often self-deprecatingly about a jumper's own family and friends. It reflects a genuine gap: the sport has a dense vocabulary and a set of assumptions that are largely invisible from outside.
This glossary exists partly to close that gap, so that the language stops being a barrier to understanding what people are talking about.
These pages explain what things are so the language makes sense. They are not instruction and cannot substitute for it — skydiving is taught in person by rated instructors at a drop zone, and anything involving equipment handling or emergency procedures belongs there rather than on a web page.
