Toggles are the handles attached to the canopy's steering lines, stowed on the rear risers and unstowed after opening. Pulling the right toggle turns right, the left turns left, and pulling both together slows the canopy down.
How steering works
Each steering line runs to the tail of the canopy on its side. Pulling one deflects that side's trailing edge, creating drag and turning the canopy toward it.
Pulling both simultaneously deflects the whole tail, converting forward speed into lift and slowing the descent. This is the flare, and timing it correctly is what makes the difference between a stand-up landing and a hard one.
Why flare timing is taught, not read
Correct flare height and rate vary with canopy, wing loading, wind and density altitude. It is learned through repetition with an instructor watching and giving radio or debrief feedback — not from a description.
